Punjab government approves release of Gharials in Sutlej and Beas rivers to promote eco-tourism
1. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal approved release of Gharials in Sutlej and Beas rives in the state to promote eco-tourism.
2. Initially, 10 Gharials will be released in the Harike Wildlife Sanctuary as a part of ‘Gharial Recovery Action Plan’.
3. Decision in this regard was taken after recommendations of the State Board for Wildlife.

Oil India commissions 54 MW capacity wind energy projects in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh
1. India’s second largest state-owned oil explorer company, Oil India Limited (OIL) has commissioned 54 MW wind energy projects saddled between Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
2. The spilt capacity of project between both states is 38 MW plant located at Chandgarh in Madhya Pradesh and 16 MW plant located at Patan in Gujarat.
3. The Project is fully funded by OIL and its total cost is Rs 439 crore that includes Rs 126.5 crore for the Gujarat plant and Rs 312.45 crore for the Madhya Pradesh plant.

4. The Project is being run by Chennai based Gamesa Wind Turbines who are the project developers. 

Psychiatrist Vikram Patel in Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world
1. Goa-based psychiatrist Dr Vikram Patel who is also a professor of international mental health at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, has made it to the Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world.
2. MR patel is co-founder of Sangath, a mental health research NGO based in Goa.


James Anderson surpasses Ian Botham to become England’s leading wicket-taker in Tests
1. James Anderson became England’s highest wicket-taker in Test cricket when he claimed his 384th victim in the drawn first Test against West Indies in Antigua on Friday.
2. The 32-year-old fast bowler surpassed Ian Botham’s haul of 383 wickets when he had Denesh Ramdin caught for 57 by Alastair Cook at first slip in the final session on the last day of his 100th Test.

Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim tons help Bangladesh end 16-year wait
1. Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim both struck centuries as Bangladesh ended its win drought against Pakistan, beating the visitors by 79 runs in the first one-day international on Friday.
2. It was Bangladesh’s first win over Pakistan since 1999.

Russia to invest $ 2 Billion in Pakistan for Gas Pipeline
1. Russia will invest a whopping $2 billion in Pakistan to build a 1,100-kilometre pipeline. This pipeline will be from southern port city of Karachi to Lahore to transport liquefied natural gas.
2. “Russia will start its first LNG exports in 2016 and has also offered to sell gas to Pakistan,
3. Russia is the second-largest producer of natural gas in the world and is seeking to diversify its export markets after a spat last year with with the European Union, its main buyer, over Ukraine.
4. Pakistan is working on two pipelines to transport re-gassified LNG from Karachi to the northern parts of the country.
5. The first pipeline will connect Gwadar Port to the main natural gas pipeline hub in Nawabshah, while the second will connect Karachi to Lahore.

1. Japan population falls to 15-year low & more than one in four people now aged 65 or older. Japan’s population has shrunk for the fourth year running, falling back to a level it was last at in 2000
2. The population dropped by 0.17 percent, or 215,000 people, to 127,083,000 as of October 1 last year, according to the data released on Friday.

1. The Narendra Modi government is considering a proposal to make lion India’s national animal
2. The tiger that has had the coveted status of National Animal since 1972.
3. The idea has triggered a furore among wildlife activists who called it bizarre, saying it would dilute the campaign to save tigers and pave the way for clearance of industrial projects near tiger sanctuaries.
4. Tiger was adopted as the national animal at a meeting of the Indian Board for Wildlife (now NBWL) in 1972 in view of its “worldwide importance, existence in the entire country and the need for its protection.
5. In a recent countrywide assessment, it was found that India is home to more than 2,200 tigers.

Ashish Jakhar from Haryana sets National Youth record in hammer throw
1. Ashish Jakhar from Haryana set a national youth record in boys’ hammer throw event and won gold medal in the 12th National Youth Athletics Championships held in Bambolim, Goa.
2. In this event, Ashish had hurled 5kg ball-and-chain at record distance of 72.04 metres in a second throw which made a national youth record. In his opening throw he had hurdled at a distance of 71.92 metres.
