The two mostly used formula in this chapter are:
  1. Average = Sum of quantities/Number of quantities.
  2. Suppose a man covers a certain distance at x kmph and an equal distance at y kmph, then the average speed during the whole journey is (2xy/x+y) kmph.

Average Problems With Solutions IBPS Clerk

1. The average weight of A, B and C is 45 kg. If the weight of A and B be 40 kg and that of B and C is 43 kg, then the weight of B is.
  • a) 17 kg
  • b) 20 kg
  • c) 26 kg
  • d) 31 kg
Solution: D - Let A,B,C represent their respective weights.
Then, we have A + B + C = (45 x 3) = 135 (i)
A + B = (40 x 2) = 80 (ii)
B + C = (43 x 2) = 86 (iii)
Adding (ii) and (iii)
we get: A + 2B + C = 166 (iv)
Subtracting (i) from (iv)
we get B = 31
Therefore B’s weight =31 kg

2. The average monthly income of P and Q is Rs.5050. the average monthly income of Q and R is Rs. 6250 and the average monthly income of P and R is Rs.5200. the monthly income of P is.
  • a) Rs.3500
  • b) Rs.4000
  • c) Rs.4050
  • d) Rs.5000
Answer: B - let P, Q and R represent their respective monthly incomes.
Then, we have P + Q = (5050 x 2) = 10100 (i)
Q + R = (6250 x 2) = 12500 (ii)
P + R = (5200 x 2) = 10400 (iii)
Adding (i), (ii) and (iii),
we get: 2(P + Q + R) = 33000 (iv)
Subtracting (ii) from (iv)
we get p = 4000
Therefore p’s monthly income = Rs 4000

3. The average age of 36 students in a group is 14 years. When teacher’s age is included to it, the average increases by one. What is the teacher’s age in years
  • a) 31
  • b) 36
  • b) 51
  • d) none of these
Answer : C - age of teacher = (37 x 15 - 36 x 14) years = 51 years

4. The average monthly salary of 20 employees in an organizations is Rs.1500. if the manager’s salary is added, the average salary increases by 100. What is the manager’s monthly salary
  • a) Rs.2000
  • b) Rs.2400
  • C) Rs. 3600
  • d) Rs.4800
Answer: C - manager’s monthly salary = Rs. (1600 x 21 - 1500 x 20) = Rs. 3600

5. The average weight of 8 persons increases by 2.5 kg when a new person comes in place of one of them weighing 65 kg. What might be the weight of the new person?
  • a) 76 kg
  • b) 76.5 kg
  • c) 85 Kg
  • d )none of these
Answer: B - total weight increased = (8 x 2.5) kg=20 kg
Weight of new person= (65 + 20) kg = 85 kg

6. The average of 11 results is 50. If the average of first six results is 49 and that of last six is 52, find the sixth result.
  • a) 56
  • b) 98
  • c) 45
  • d) 55
Answer: A - The total of 11 results = 11 x 50 = 550
The total of first 6 results = 6 x 49 = 294
The total of last 6 results = 6 x 52 = 312
The 6th result is common to both; Sixth result = 294 + 312 - 550 = 56.

7. A man bought 13 shirts of Rs.50 each, 15 Pants of Rs.60 each and 12 pairs of shoes at Rs.65 a pair. Find the average value of each article.
  • a) 58
  • b) 58.25
  • c) 60
  • d) 48
Answer: B - Average = (13 x 50 + 15 x 60 + 12 x 65)/(13 + 15 + 12) = Rs 58.25.

8. The average weight of 4 men is increased by 3 kg when one of them who weighs 120 kg is replaced by another man. What is the weight of the new man?
  • a) 130 kg
  • b)132 kg
  • c) 140 kg
  • d)180 kg
Answer: B - If the average weight is increased by 3 kg, then the sum of weights increases
By 3 x 4 = 12 kg.
And thus increase in weight is due to the extra weight included due to the inclusion Of new person.
Therefore weight of new man = 120 + 12 = 132 kg.

  • a. 6.25
  • b. 6.5
  • c. 6.75
  • d. 7
Answer: A - Required run rate = (282 - (3.2 x 10))/40 = 250/40 = 6.25

10. A family consists of grandparents, parents and three grandchildren. The average age of the grandparents is 67 years, that of the parents is 35 years and that of the grandchildren is 6 years. What is the average age of the family?
  • a. 28 4/7 years
  • b. 31 5/7 years
  • c. 32 1/7 years
  • d. None of these
Answer:  B = (67 x 2 + 35 x 2 + 6 x 3)/(2 + 2 + 3) = 222/7 = 31 5/7 years
