The first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kerala started functioning from a temporary campus at Palakkad district, scripting a new chapter in the higher education sector in the state.
The IIT-P campus was opened in Palakkad district at a function and Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani addressed the students through video conferencing.
In the initial phase, IIT-Palakkad will offer four B-Tech streams including Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
Classes of the institute will begin in a temporary campus located near Valayar in Palakkad district. It will have around 117 students who have been admitted to the new campus and are mostly from Uttar Pradesh.
Later this temporary campus will be shifted to a 500 acre permanent campus located at Puthussery in the district. It will be shifted in next three years, after completion of land acquisition process and construction of buildings.
