Hindus to be world’s 3rd largest population by 2050: Report
1. Hindus will become the world’s third largest population by 2050
2. While India will overtake Indonesia as the country with the largest Muslim population, according to a new study.
3. By 2050, Hindus will be third, making up 14.9 per cent of the world’s total population, followed by people who do not affiliate with any religion, accounting for 13.2 per cent.
4. The Hindu population is projected to rise by 34 per cent worldwide, from a little over 1 billion to nearly 1.4 billion by 2050.
5. The people with no religious affiliation currently have the third largest share of the world’s total population.
6. Muslims are projected to grow faster than the world’s overall population.
7. India will retain a Hindu majority but also will have the largest Muslim population of any country in the world, surpassing Indonesia
8. Over the next four decades, Christians will remain the largest religious group, but Islam will grow faster than any other major religion.


Kannada becomes mandatory subject in Karnataka schools
1. The Karnataka Assembly passed a bill making the study of the local Kannada language compulsory for all students from class 1 to class 10 in all schools in the state.
2. The Kannada Language Learning Bill 2015 codifies a policy decision of the state government to ensure that all students must be taught Kannada “as one of the compulsory language in all classes in a phased manner from the academic year 2015-16”.
3. According to the new law, Kannada shall be taught either as a first language or a second language in all schools.
4. Schools that are not teaching Kannada as a first or second language at present must introduce it in class 1 from the 2015-16 academic year and extended it till class X.
5. Moreover, schools shall follow text books prescribed by the state.

K N Tripathi to be sworn in as Mizoram Governor
1. West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi will be sworn in and given additional charge of Mizoram on Saturday, the state government has announced.
2. Tripathi will take over from sacked Mizoram Governor Aziz Qureshi to become the seventh governor of the north-eastern state in nine months.

Rajasthan government introduces microchips to prevent cow abandoning
1. The Vasundhara Raje government is alarmed by the abandonment of cows in the state and has decided to track cattle by planting microchips on them.
2. The state government is in the process of bringing in an amendment in the Rajasthan Goshala Act 1960 as part of which, all cattle breeders will have to register themselves with the animal husbandry department and keep track of their cattle through microchips.
3. The state government is also mulling a provision of insurance on cattle so that old and frail cows are not abandoned but looked after till they perish

1. Rano M Shaiza, Nagaland’s first and so far only woman MP, died in Kohima
2. Elected to the sixth Lok Sabha in 1977
3. Rano Shaiza was 86
About Shaiza
1. She was the first Naga woman to study science after passing out of school.
2. Shaiza worked as a teacher before entering politics, in the process founding the Naga Mothers’ Association that worked for prohibition.
3. She was also the first president of the Naga Women’s Federation of the Naga National Council, and was imprisoned for 19 months during the early period of the Naga movement in the 1960s.
4. She served as president of the United Democratic Party in a state where women hardly get space in politics.
5. When she entered the Lok Sabha, it was by defeating then Congress CM Hokishe Sema.
6. She helped organise a peace meeting between then PM Morarji Desai and her uncle Phizo.

Indian American origin professor wins prestigious Peltier Award
1. An Indian-American assistant professor, who employs a game called “Baffa Baffa” to have students understand culture’s role in business, has won the prestigious Peltier Award for her innovative teaching methods.
2. Rajani Ganesh-Pillai, who teaches marketing at the North Dakota State University.
3. One of her innovative practices is a game called “Baffa Baffa,” where the goal is to have students understand culture’s role in business and how it can affect transactions and relationships.
4. The Peltier Award was established by Joseph and Norma Peltier to honor innovation in teaching. The NDSU Development Foundation sponsors the awards.

Brendon McCullum named New Zealand’s Cricketer of the Year award
1. New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has been awarded Sir Richard Hadlee medal, the country’s highest cricketing honour, for his inspirational leadership and exemplary batting at a glittering ceremony, in Auckland.
2. McCullum, 33, led the Kiwis to their first World Cup final where they did lose to Australia by seven wickets at a packed MCG on March 29 but won a million fans with their entertaining show throughout the 50-over showpiece event.
3. With 328 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 188.50, McCullum led by example to be named captain of the ICC’s team of the tournament.

Former World Champion hurdler liu Xiang to Retire
1. China’s former Olympic champion hurdler Liu Xiang plans to announcement his retirement next week following years of nagging injuries.
2. The 31-year-old Liu became one of China’s best-known athletes by winning the 110-meter hurdles title at the 2004 Athens Olympics in a then-world record time.

1. Egypt and Nigeria accounted for well over 1,000 of the death sentences announced last year.

3. Amnesty International says in its latest annual report on the death penalty.
4. The countries with the most recorded executions last year were Iran with at least 289, Saudi Arabia with at least 90, Iraq with at least 61 and the United States with at least 35.
5. Amnesty International also expressed concern about countries that resumed the practice of executions, including Pakistan, which reinstated the death penalty in December after a Pakistani Taliban attack on a school killed 150 people, most of them children.

Sunita Tomar, poster girl of India’s Anti-Tobacco campaign dies
1. Sunita Tomar, poster girl of India’s anti-tobacco campaign passed away at her hometown in Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh. 
2. She was 28 and was diagnosed with oral cancer.
3. She had appeared in government’s 30-second video titled ‘Sunita’ which had highlighted the devastating effect of smokeless tobacco. The video had shown her personal testimony before and after an operation to remove the cancerous growth and a part of her mouth.
4. For this video Sunita had teamed with Voice of Tobacco Victims (VoTV) in order to create awareness about the tobacco-cancer.

Captain Anoop Kumar Sharma takes over as CEO of Essar Shipping
1. Captain Anoop Kumar Sharma has taken over as whole-time director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Essar Shipping Ltd (ESL).
2. He replaced Ramakrishnan A. R. who had retired from service on 31 March 2015.
3. Sharma has been associated with ESL since August 2008.
4. Previously he was associated with Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) for 16 years.

Amitabh Bachchan has been honoured by Egypt’s Academy of Arts
1. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan received a honorary doctorate from the Egyptian Academy of Arts for his contribution to cinema.
2. He was conferred with the title on 3rd April, 2015.
